Countywide bus service coming

TYLER COUNTY – Brazos Transit District is extending its area of service into Tyler County, starting on Monday, Sept. 9.

The public transportation service, which is headquartered in Bryan, will provide bus service within the county, on Mondays, for the time being as the program launches.

The service will run from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., and anyone needing bus service can schedule a ride by calling 979-778-4480 or toll-free at 800-272-0039.

In order to schedule a trip, passengers must be able to give the scheduler the following information:

• name, phone number and complete pick-up address

• the date that transportation is desired

• the time passenger needs to arrive at destination

• the complete address of destination, including suite and/or building, doctor’s name, phone number, etc.

• passenger’s return address

• if a wheelchair, scooter or other mobility device is needed

If the passenger has a personal care attendant or companion, the application must be signed by a physician in order for the companion/attendant to tide free of charge.

The service is for anyone who needs a ride, whether disabled or not. The Brazos Transit District is a general public transportation provider, that, according to its website, operates fixed routes, ADA paratransit service as well as demand and response service. It was founded in 1974, and covered the seven counties of the Brazos Valley region.

It now serves 20 counties in central and east Texas, and covers more than 14,000 square miles, representing a population of more than 1.4 million. It runs routes in nearby Livingston, as well as Lufkin, Dayton, Cleveland and other cities and counties in the region.

Brazos Transit District receives funding through the Federal Transportation Administration and the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT).
