Accepting gifts honors the giver, the recipient

Accepting gifts honors the giver, the recipient

This has been a week or so of giving and receiving. Both chambers of commerce give scholarships to the students of our high schools, but so do other organizations and individuals.

Last week the SJC Historical Commission was shown with donations of artwork from generous local residents. This week, the Women’s League of San Jacinto County handed out 12 checks to the senior centers of Coldspring and Shepherd, Coldspring Community Center and Public Library, Quilts for Kids and the third ranking seniors of Coldspring and Shepherd high schools.

The new Rand McIntyre Helping Hands Food Pantry got their check; others were given checks and they will feature in future columns. Altogether, the Women’s League gave away $7,500. This is money raised by the members throughout the years. The ‘Style Show’ held in the Spring is a big fundraiser and you will hear more about that in the future.

The Women’s League will start its new year in September. The first guest speaker will be LaNora Purvis, founder of Heaven’s Army. She will talk about her nonprofit group that helps women in dire need, who need a safe place to live and to overcome their problems. Lunch is $15; come to mix and mingle at 11:30 a.m., lunch is served at noon. The venue is the Coldspring Community Center next to the Courthouse.

• Shepherd Chamber of Commerce thanks McClain’s Supermarket for the generous check toward the Independence Day event. The Children’s & Community Impact Center is always busy raising money for the needy too, as shown by their recent benefit.

Thanks to everyone who gives their time and money to help others in their time of need.

• The Impact Center became Shepherd Chamber of Commerce’s Business of the Month. Brenda Myers and her board members Jennifer Arrington, DeeDee Collingsworth and Kimberly Arrendell, along with Brenda, Lonna Newby and Gordon Fisher, posed by their award from Coldspring Chamber of Commerce.

• Scholarships are always fun to give to grads who are moving into the next phase of their lives. This week Shepherd Chamber gave Ronnie Charles a check for $1,500 as he moves to his new place at Mississippi State University. He and his proud mom Betty came to Shepherd Library for their photo op.

Ronnie will study mechanical engineering and wants to expand his experience in college organizations. I always remind the scholarship recipients to let us know how they get on when they come home from their first semester. We want to know more of their stories.

• In case you did not know, Christmas in July is now Christmas in August. Aug. 31 is the new date for this event. It will feature all the vendors, characters and fun of the annual event which was postponed this year because of the storm.

SJC Senior Center in Coldspring will have a speaker on Aug. 14 who will talk about hospice. There is a lot more to this subject than previously thought. Also, if you want to see a Weight Watchers group at the Center, sign up on the sheet on the desk inside the door. There are nine people signed up and 10 is needed before the Weight Watchers company will start a group.

Contact the Shepherd Chamber of Commerce at (210) 995-7420 or the Coldspring Chamber at (936) 653-2184.

Yvonne Cones is president of the Shepherd Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Coldspring Chamber of Commerce.
