County orders new radios

COLDSPRING — The San Jacinto County Commissioners Court approved ordering new mobile radios for the Sheriff’s Department that meet proper parameters.

County Judge Fritz Faulkner said at the Wednesday meeting that previously, the county looked to purchase certain mobile and handheld radios to replace the failing systems currently in use; however, it came to light that the mobile models were not dual band and would require two radios installed into cars to be able to talk on two bands.

The new mobile radios would be about three times as expensive; however, Commissioner Laddie McAnally felt it would be better to get the department what it needs and come up with the additional $39,000 from different law enforcement grant funds.

Commissioner Donnie Marrs voted against the measure, stating he wanted more information from the Sheriff’s Department.

In a separate matter, the county approved the creation of a second Emergency Services District for the Waterwood Subdivision, which will carry a 9.9 cent per $100 tax rate on affected landowners.

At a public hearing on Wednesday, Commissioner Mark Nettuno said that the main concern in the past was the funding, as when it was presented previously it looked like there would be a deficit budget.

Jamie Groskopf, spokesman for the subdivision, said the homeowners’ association and municipal utilities district will make up any shortfalls until such time as the ESD can stand on its own financially.

In other business, the board:

•appointed T.C. Jones as the early voting election judge, as well as approving counting station personnel and election judges;

•approved the payment of $14,775 for the purchase of necessary equipment for the upcoming election;

•approved the resolution for the November general election;

•approved the purchase of a transfer switch from Controls & Electrical Services for $5,656.52;

•approved the purchase of replacement flooring for a jail cell for $3,474.94;

•approved a bid for tree removal, with Faulkner voting against the measure;

•approved a road use agreement and permit application fee for the Bahia Pipeline enterprise;

•approved a near $370,000 bid from Dylan Constructions for repairs to the roof of the jail;

•approved the disposal of salvage items from the County Auditor’s Office;

•proclaimed Aug. 6 as Nellie Hardin Day, who turned 90 years old; and

•approved the community back to school prayer event at the Courthouse.
