County bands together in storm’s aftermath

County bands together in storm’s aftermath

Thank you everyone who helped get our area back on track with tree removals and power restoration. I know we suffered without A/C. How did those early pioneers do it? Horse-drawn wagons and no refrigeration, they were heroes.

This last week our heroes were the people out in that heat fixing the power lines and those who were helping supply others in need. Bless them every one.

The photo of Lake Livingston at sunset was from my friend’s house. The one of the Coldspring and Bear Creek VFD’s also came from a friend.

The week was one where many events were cancelled or postponed. Hopefully we will soon be able to get back to normal. Shepherd City Council postponed its meeting. Coldspring Chamber of Commerce postponed its quarterly lunch to July 23, with guest speakers the mayors of Coldspring, Point Blank and Shepherd talking about our emergency services and how we coped, joined by Kris Eastham.

Both Coldspring and Shepherd opened their centers to give relief. Hot meals were donated and Meals Ready to Eat were given out at various churches and fire departments.

Coldspring Library opened to give people a cooling place to enjoy. Shepherd was without power till Sunday, so SJC Senior Center in Coldspring was also a welcome place to visit, to eat and cool down.

Kris Eastham of Texas Department of Emergency Management would like to remind those who have had damage to their homes or businesses that they can download the form online, and also, if needed, fill out the part if you need help clearing damage away. He writes that they need all the information from this before they can send it to the State for Federal relief.

Kris reminds us that this damage must be from Hurricane Beryl and not the floods. Go to http://damage.tdem.texas.gov. You can call him at (936) 252-0193.

• Here are some things to watch for. Interested in quilting? The Red Barn Retreat has the Coldspring Quilts for Kids Sew Day’ starting at 10 a.m. This group loves to quilt together and makes quilts for kids in need so every first responder in our county has a quilt in the car when there is an accident or situation with a child. The group has made thousands of quilts. Call (936) 653-8222 or go to the Red Barn website.

• It will be Christmas in July in Coldspring on July 27 from 9 a.m. till 3 p.m. This is an annual event with Santa Claus and possibly an elf or two appearing for photo opportunities. Situated around the Courthouse vendors of many kinds will come to sell their goods. Call (936) 827-8310 for more information.

• First Saturday of the month is Cars, Coffee and Donuts in the Courthouse Square. CABMA host this event on the Saturday morning and if you want to know more go to the web site or call Tisha Matticks at (281) 782-7252 or Danielle Matheu-Nuro at (832) 646-9888.

Stay cool and safe.

Contact the Shepherd Chamber of Commerce at (210) 995-7420 or the Coldspring Chamber at (936) 653-2184.

Yvonne Cones is president of the Shepherd Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Coldspring Chamber of Commerce.
