Davis speaks to Lions about camp experience

By Michael G. Maness

WOODVILLE –Twelve-year-old Elijah Davis, of Woodville, told the Woodville Lions Club about his recent experience at the Texas Lions Camp in Kerrville.

He thanked the Lions Camp for all they did, and his mother, Sarah, fixed the evening’s delicious meal at the club’s regular second Thursday evening meeting, Aug. 8.

Davis excitingly shared how he loved the rock climbing, archery, pool, and camping out under the stars.  Over 100 other children with diabetes were sponsored by Lions Clubs throughout Texas for a week of fun and diabetic education.

Davis shared about his Type 1 diabetes that is currently incurable, though Type 2 can be managed with diet and exercise.

Davis’ mother stepped up to aid her son, showing his “hardware” which helps him keep an eye on his glucose level and a pump that injects insulin. She said she was so thankful to the Lions and so proud of her son, and mentioned how independent he was as he learned how to know when his body’s chemistry was off and what to do.

Davis was all smiles, energetic, and reading from his cell phone notes he had prepared.  He praised the counselors and doctors at the camp, all of which reenforced the training he has been mastering all of his young life.

Woodville Lion, and past District Governor Jerry Loos was appointed district chair for the fundraiser on behalf of young Davis. His family has raised $12k of the $25k needed for a diabetic dog, and the Lions District has raised $8k, with only $5k left to go.  If you are interested in helping young Davis get a diabetic doggy, you can contact Loos at 707-338-1969

The Lions Camp in Kerrville hosts several types of week-long “camps” every summer at no cost to the families, twelve types this year from June through August.  Local Lions Clubs all over Texas support the Texas Lions Camp, and some even pay for the family’s travel expenses from time to time.

So far, the Lions Camp has served over 83k campers with diabetes, down syndrome, and other disabilities. More information can be found at LionsCamp.com.
