COLDSPRING — Emergency personnel and concerned residents came together to give a family with a missing child a happy ending.
On Feb. 2, the Sheriff’s Office dispatch received a frantic call from a family in Coldspring to report a missing child lost in Sam Houston National Forest.
Rachel Savell, a 12-year-old Lincoln Middle School student with her sights set on studying marine biology at Texas A&M, was reunited with mom Mara, dad Jeremy, big brother Jacob and little brother Jesse after a concerted effort.
Searchers included personnel from the Texas Department of Corrections; Dr. Brian Taulton, COSISD; Dr. Nikki Moore; Constable Sam Houston; Texas Department of Public Safety officers; Coldspring Baptist Church members; Texas Department of Emergency Management personnel; members of the Coldspring, Bear Creek and Shepherd VFDs; and Jamie Burt and Jacob Savell, and all were presented with San Jacinto County Sheriff’s Office Certificates of Appreciation.
The group was coordinated by the Sheriff’s Office, and young Rachel was found unharmed and in good health.
Rachel said later that people should “stay out of the woods at night unless you are qualified, and you know the environment.”
In appreciation for the dedication and support from the first responders and hundreds of volunteers, the Savells family provided a complete meal service during the Certificate of Appreciation awards ceremony on Wednesday.
Mara Savell, Rachel’s mother, relayed a special thanks from her and the entire Savell family “for those who contributed to the successful reuniting with her daughter Rachel and for all their prayers.”
She said that on behalf of her entire family, she extends the most heartfelt love and affection to the community.
