Balance ... it applies to roller skating and life

Recently I decided to lace up a pair of roller skates and join my grandkids on the rink. In the early 80s, it was easy and fun, but in this instance, the fun lasted about 30 minutes. I really hate to have to add roller skating to the growing list of activities I cannot enjoy anymore, this side of heaven.

The event caused me to pause, maybe because my grandmother broke both of her arms at age 55, and then my mother broke both of her arms more recently. I want to break the cycle, and this was a little too close for comfort.

Many other things in life, when not in balance, cause us pain, or at least discomfort or disruption. If I am honest, the weak areas in my character, or in my life choices, all shine a light on a time, at least temporarily, when I lacked balance.

On a positive note, I intend to seek balance for the rest of my life. There is already more behind me than ahead, so no more time to waste. Work, relaxation, relationships, recreation, mental, spiritual, health, fitness, finances, volunteerism, activism … even how I view and react to world events, all need to be in balance.

For me, a few areas above come easy, a few others not so much. But I will keep striving.

This week, we have added to our newspaper, a full page of fun activities for children and children at heart. It will be included in each edition going forward. I encourage you all to either use it for yourself or share it with the children in your life. This will contribute to a little more balance in all our lives. Enjoy!
