Summer winding down to new school year

By Julia McMichael

Despite the rain, this summer has been better than the summer we had last year. We had 46 days of over 100-degree heat not counting the heat index. It was unbearable to do anything outdoors.

I went to Houston this weekend, and the effects of Hurricane Beryl were devastating to see in most of the neighborhoods. Large and small trees laying in yards, streets, and everywhere.

I don’t know how long it will take for this mess to be cleaned up, but the real question is who will pay for the cleanup and where does the debris go to be discarded?

I believe summer school and vacation bible schools are finished, and parents must now get ready for the new 2024-2025 school term. My first thing to tell you is Aug. 9-11 is tax-free day in Texas to buy certain items, supplies, and clothes without sales tax.

With school starting on Aug. 7, I guess you must wait to shop that weekend if you want to save money. This event was never a good idea for me. The hustle and bustle, crowds, lack of sizes, and parking was never worthwhile to me to want to participate.

This week there will be activities at the Trinity Community Center for TISD District Teacher Training for both old and new teachers Wednesday-Friday. Speakers and refreshments are on the agenda, and Subway and Agavales will be providing lunches.

TISD Meet the Teacher Nights are Monday and Tuesday.

Lansberry Elementary Meet the Teacher’s Night is Monday, and the event is 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on their campus on Maple Street. Trinity Middle School and Trinity High School host their Meet the Teacher Night on Tuesday from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on their campuses on Highway 94 East or Caroline Street.

Meet the Tigers’ Night is Aug. 8 at 7 p.m. in the gym at the Trinity High School Campus. For your information, the four-day school week for students to attend school does not start until October.

• Dorcas Wills Memorial Baptist Church will host a Grief and Share program that started Tuesday and ends Oct. 29.

The Grief and Share program is a weekly grief support group to find hope and healing after the death of a loved one. This program is sponsored by Dorcas Wills Memorial Baptist Church and will meet on Tuesday each week from 2 -4 p.m.

Surviving the Holidays, a similar group, will meet Nov. 5. The church is located at 201 N. Robb and the class meets upstairs in the Main Building in the Adult 1 Meeting Room
