City opts to seek better deals

GROVETON — The Groveton City Council is looking for better prices for both health insurance and waste removal.

Mayor Ralph Bennett said that at the July 22 meeting, the council tabled a price increase request from Pineywoods Sanitation, which the city uses for trash removal and waste receptacles.

Bennett said that the old contract had expired, and changes in ownership at Pineywoods led the company to request a 2 percent increase.

However, council members cited state law, and tabled the request and will now seek bids from other companies in the area.

The increase would raise rates for customers about 32 cents per week, from $15.90 to $16.22.

“We wanted to see if we can get more competitive,” Bennett said.

In the same vein, the city tabled renewal of the health insurance it provides for the two city employees to seek bids.

Bennett said the two employees are insured by Blue Cross/Blue Shield; however, the firm is seeking a premium increase from $1,959.08 to $2,187.74, which currently is paid for by the city.

In other business, the council:

• approved seeking bids to upgrade court software, and plans to review the structure of fines;

• discussed the finished purchase of a new library building, and subsequent renovations;

• discussed starting on construction of a new water storage tank at MLK and Calhoun streets; and

• discussed replacing streetlights to LED bulbs to make areas brighter and safer.
