Tolbert retires after 24-year Army career

Col. Jason Tolbert has retired after 24 years in the US Army. A retirement ceremony was held at his current duty station at Fort Sill, OK on June 21.

Tolbert was born and raised in Woodville. He attended Texas A&M University and was commissioned as a Field Artillery officer in May of 2000 through the ROTC program there. His first duty assignment was at Fort Polk, LA where he served as Troop Fire Support Officer, Battery Fire Direction Officer, Platoon Leader, and Squadron Fire Support Officer with the Second Squadron, Second Calvary Regiment. It was with this unit that Tolbert served his first 12-month tour in Iraq.

Following his assignment at Fort Polk, Tolbert served as Battalion S4 at Fort Lewis WA before taking command of C Battery, Second Battalion, 12th Field Artillery Regiment.

As a Battery Commander, he deployed again to Iraq from 2007-2008. He returned to Fort Polk as a Battery Senior Observer Coach/Trainer and then Chief of Operations at the Joint Readiness Training Center.

As a Major, Tolbert was stationed at Fort Hood, TX where he was assigned Squadron S3 for Steel Squadron and then as the Regimental XO for the Third Cavalry Regiment. During his tenure as the Regimental Executive Officer, he deployed to Afghanistan for six months in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Tolbert was then assigned to the Army Human Resources Command at Fort Knox, KY where he served as Chief of Plans for the Officer Readiness Division.

Tolbert commanded the Second Battalion, Third Field Artillery Regiment at Fort Bliss, from October 2017 to June 2019.

Upon completion of command, Tolbert attended the U.S. Army War College at Carlisle Barracks, PA where he received a Masters of Strategic Studies followed by appointment as Pre-Command Instructor at Fort Leavenworth, KS. Tolbert subsequently deployed again as the Director of Operations for the United States Security Coordinator for Israel and the Palestinian Authority at the U.S. Embassy, Jerusalem. Tolbert’s final assignment was the Director for the Directorate of Training and Doctrine for the Fire Centers of Excellence, Fort Sill, OK.

Tolbert’s military awards and decorations include three Bronze Star Medals, five Meritorious Service Medals, the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, two Army Achievement Medals, the Legion of Merit Medal and various other unit and service medals. He also earned the Combat Action Badge and Parachutist Badge Tolbert is married to the former Sara Jacobs of El Paso, and they have three children.
