63rd annual Polk County Youth Rodeo kicks off July 10

The 63rd annual Polk County Youth Rodeo will kick off July 10 and run through July 13 at the Barney Wiggins Memorial Arena located at 101 Fair St. in Livingston. One of the largest youth rodeos in Texas that is open to the public, youth come from all over the state and surrounding states to compete for money, saddles and buckles.

The four-day event features bareback riding, tiedown roping, cloverleaf barrels, straightaway barrels, chute dogging, saddle bronc riding, breakaway roping, goats tying, bull riding, pole bending, mugging ribbon roping, bull riding, team roping local straightaways and mutton busting. Boys and girls compete in the following age categories: eight and under, nine to 12, 13-15 and 16-19. Cash prizes are awarded to the top winners in the rodeo contests.

Signups for mutton busting and local straightaways start at 5 p.m. nightly with the competitions occurring at 6 p.m. The local straightaways are for local youth only.

The grand entry will occur at 7 p.m. each night. There will also be a free calf scramble each night with three different age groups participating.

A calf dressing contest which will occur each night with the finals occurring on July 13. Additionally, the Harris County Junior Mounted Posse will perform during halftime on July 13.
