Letting Freedom Ring

— June 29 was the substitute Fourth of July this year in Shepherd, but the early celebration was just as stirring and patriotic.

The evening started around noon with the American Legion 629 Flag Ceremony followed by District Judge Travis Kitchens leading everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Greg Cones belted out “God Bless America,” and a welcome speech was offered by Mayor Charles Minton. DJ Joe LeBlanc and MC for the night introduced Yvonne Cones, Chamber of Commerce president, and there were games, music, food sales for children young and old.

Around 9 p.m. or just shortly after, fireworks by Westcott Fireworks lit up the sky.
