City looks for land for water storage

GROVETON — City officials are looking to contract with the U.S. Forest Service for land to build a second storage tank for the city’s water system.

At the June 24 meeting, the Groveton City Council discussed its latest option to improve water service — leasing land in Davy Crockett National Forest for a ground storage tank and booster pump station.

Mayor Ralph Bennett said that the land in question is next to the city’s existing Pennington connection, which is the source of city water, near the corner of Highway 287 and FM 3154. Bennett said this will increase capacity and provide a long-term water source. He also said they are still searching for another well location for an additional water source.

In other business, the council:

• discussed city financials, and that the city has funds to make it through to the next budget cycle;

• approved the purchase the building for a new library at a cost of $125,000, with the city cashing in a Library CD for $34,778.17 and taking the remaining cost from the city’s special project fund;

• approved issuing a business credit card for Bennett, to be used for emergency purchases;

•approved paying Inframark $7,187.06 for water and sewer services;

• discussed street repair and filing for grants from FEMA for reimbursement; and

• approved the renewal of health-related supplemental insurance
