Students participate in conservation project Three Leggett High School students and their teacher recently placed three “Shelbyville Cubes” into Lake Livingston that they constructed during the spring semester using supplies provided by Texas Parks & Wildlife Department and Trinity River Authority (TRA). Fish are drawn to underwater structures for both security and for the smaller baitfish it also attracts. Instructions for constructing the structures came from Friends of Lake Livingston and Texas Master Naturalists. TRA manages what and where things can be put in Lake Livingston and assisted the students by providing boat transportation to the new deployment site. If you search “Locations of Fish Habitat Structures - Texas Parks & Wildlife” you will find the locations in Lake Livingston where the structures have been placed. In previous construction projects, area high school students have used a design called a Georgia Cube that is constructed with PVC pipe and a drainage pipe. These new cubes were developed by fishermen on Lake Shelbyville in Illinois as a variation of the Georgia Cube, which was developed by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. Studies in Lake Shelbyville have found that fish start congregating on the revised structures only hours after deployment. To participate in projects that enhance the health of the lake and its plant and animal inhabitants, contact Friends of Lake Livingston at [email protected]. COURTESY PHOTO
