That’s what it says, but not what it means

Many years ago, my dad was sharing with my uncle how far New Orleans was from the Gulf of Mexico. My dad told my uncle it was 110 miles. My uncle proceeded to argue with my dad, so my dad suggested getting the encyclopedia out and looking it up. After my uncle was shown what the encyclopedia showed, my uncle said the encyclopedia was wrong.

On another occasion, I was studying with a person. We were using the Bible to see what God’s word had to say on a given subject. The person studying with me, said, “That’s what it says, but that’s not what it means.”

The Apostle Paul wrote these words in Ephesians 3:2-7. Surely you have heard about the administration of God’s grace that was given to me for you, 3 that is, the mystery made known to me by revelation, as I have already written briefly. In reading this, then, you will be able to understand my insight into the mystery of Christ, which was not made known to people in other generations as it has now been revealed by the Spirit to God’s holy apostles and prophets. 6 This mystery is that through the gospel the Gentiles are heirs together with Israel, members together of one body, and sharers together in the promise in Christ Jesus.

Did you notice he said that we can read and understand?
