From Enterprise Staff

In a field of tough competitors, Polk County Publishing Company brought home 16 awards from the 2024 Better Newspaper Contest during the 144th annual Texas Press Association Convention & Trade Show held June 20-21 at the Hilton College Station Conference Center & Hotel in College Station.

This year 100 newspapers from throughout the state submitted 956 entries in 18 different categories. Competitions were divided into divisions in which newspapers competed against publications of similar circulation. The entries were judged by members of the Georgia Press Association.

Publisher Kelli Barnes, Advertising Director Ashley Keenan, Polk County Enterprise Editor Emily Banks Wooten, Tyler County Booster Editor Chris Edwards, and Tony Farkas, editor of the Trinity County News-Standard and the San Jacinto News-Times, attended the convention and trade show, participating in numerous informative sessions on current industry topics.

The Polk County Enterprise earned third place honor for advertising and best magazine and fourth place honors for community service and special section.

The third place for advertising was for three advertisements designed and built by Graphic Design Editor Amy Holzworth. One was an advertisement for First State Bank that ran in the Aug. 17, 2023 issue. Another was an advertisement for Bloodworth Law Firm that ran in the Oct. 8, 2023 issue. The final one was an advertisement for Vickery that ran in the Dec. 28, 2023 issue.

The third place for best magazine was for the Summer 2023 issue (Issue 22) of East Texan magazine.

The fourth place for community service was for a compilation of the newspaper’s coverage of the Alabama-Coushatta Tribe of Texas, compiled by Wooten. “Very thorough coverage of the tribe and its impact on the community,” judges commented.

The fourth place for special section was for the 2023 Polk County Welcome Guide. “Great cover art. Well done factbook. Learned a lot about Polk County!” judges commented.

Other newspapers owned by Polk County Publishing Company that placed in the contest were the Tyler County Booster, the San Jacinto News-Times and the Trinity County News-Standard.

The Tyler County Booster won second place for advertising, third place for general excellence and third place for page design.
