PTECH advisory board meeting reveals successes

“Livingston High School students can earn their high school diploma, a level one or two certification, an industrial-based certification, and/or their associate’s degree before they receive their high school diploma,” Blake Thornton, Livingston ISD’s career and technical education coordinator, said during the Pathways in Technology (PTECH) Early College High School advisory board meeting June 20.

“Through our partnership with the Lamar State Colleges, all courses are taught on the LHS campus. All of our PTECH students begin as incoming freshmen and take both CTE college and dual credit courses,” Thornton said.

Three students shared about their experience taking PTECH classes this past school year during the advisory board meeting – Lacee Nicol, a health science student, Jaxon Grimm, a criminal justice student, and Zayden Martin, a welding student.

The school year ended with 26 PTECH students in health science, 37 in welding and 10 in criminal justice. Next year’s PTECH program will be expanded to include culinary arts. Another highlight for sophomore students advancing to the next level will be more interactive visits with industry partners. Example plans include field trips to expose students to view work situations in welding as well as equipment used in health science fields and law enforcement.

“It’s important to build jobs, futures and careers in our community, and it’s exciting to take one industry like criminal justice, an area that is so varied, and know that this student could be our future deputy sheriff, that they are being trained to protect the community,” LISD Superintendent Dr. Brent E. Hawkins said.
