Shows coming to Emporium

WOODVILLE – The downtown Woodville arts district is buzzing with activity and excitement as two touring acts are scheduled to appear on the Emporium Stage this weekend and next.

First up is a touring musical theatrical production of “Beehive: The ‘60’s Musical.” The play, written by Larry Gallagher, is being produced by the Beaumont Community Players, who are touring the show throughout the region, and directed by Marykate Flanagan.

The work is described as an exploration of the racial dynamics within the music industry of the 1960s during which it is set. A description from the Beaumont Community Players labelled it as “a nonstop, energetic celebration of iconic women and the decade of change with such timeless hits as ‘My Boyfriend’s Back,’ ‘Be My Baby,’ ‘Son of a Preacher Man’ and ‘Me and Bobby McGee’.”

The performance is sponsored by Stellar Bank, and will take place Saturday, June 22 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $25 per person, and available by calling the Emporium directly at 409-200-4759.

Next up, on Saturday, June 29, the young blues legend Hamilton Loomis will perform on the Emporium Stage.

Loomis, a Grammy-nominated artist, is a native of Galveston, and has toured internationally. He came up in a musical family, performing in his family’s doowop group, according to his biography on his website, and became a multi-instrumentalist.

At the age of 16, Loomis met the legendary Bo Diddley backstage at Rockefeller’s in Houston. By the end of the night, the young aspiring guitar-slinger Loomis was onstage with Diddley, playing guitar, and the elder bluesman became a mentor to the young man.

Blues Blast magazine described Loomis as “a nonstop turbo of power,” and Loomis is known for his energetic, crowd-pleasing performances, as well as his triple-threat abilities as a powerful guitarist, singer and songwriter.

Tickets to this show are $20 for general admission and $25 for reserved seating. The Emporium is located at 2016 West Bluff Street in Woodville.
