Celebrating freedom

— With the stirring sounds of “Oh Freedom” ringing through the air, the residents of San Jacinto County celebrated Juneteenth — when news of the Emancipation Proclamation reached Texas.

Dasey Sudderth sang the opening song, and the Rev. James Elmore blessed the occasion. Words of welcome were supplied by Mayor John Benestante, and Emmitt Eldridge read a proclamation issued by the county.

Following the events, and the parade, the celebration continued with activities at the Hopewell Center.
