Traffic switch planned in Corrigan near project

A major construction project has undergone a traffic shift. The Corrigan Relief Route, being constructed on the west side of Corrigan, saw a traffic switch Thursday on U.S. 59.

Motorists were moved to the outside lanes of U.S. 59, both north and southbound at U.S. 287 from south of FM 942 to south of Laurelia Loop, and from FM 1987 to north of FM 1987 in Corrigan. Crews were working to place barriers and temporary pavement on the inside lanes through these locations.

“The Corrigan Relief Route is progressing well, and this traffic switch is necessary to move forward with construction,” Texas Department of Transportation (Tx-DOT) Public Information Officer Rhonda Oaks said. “Traffic along U.S. 59 will begin to see more equipment and workers as the project continues, and motorists should stay alert and pack some extra patience through this area.”

Construction began on the Corrigan Relief Route in late 2023 after Texas Transportation Commissioners approved the $172.8 million construction for Polk County.

James Construction Group LLC out of Baton Rouge, La. is serving as contractor for the project that will bring U.S. 59 to interstate standards with construction of new U.S. 59 northbound and southbound lanes with controlled access around the city of Corrigan.

The seven-mile project will include overpasses at the United Pacific Railroad, U.S. 287, and Union Springs Road; entrance and exit ramps at U.S. 59 tie-ins, and at the U.S. 287 overpass. The project is being built to interstate standards and will enhance safety, improve emergency evacuations and support freight transport.

Motorists should obey all traffic control, reduce speed and stay alert for moving equipment and workers near the lanes of traffic through this work zone. Traffic fines double when workers are present.

In other TxDOT activity, a pre-construction meeting was recently held signaling the start of a new construction project in nearby San Jacinto County.

Work is scheduled to begin in coming days on FM 3278 to lengthen the Trinity River Bridge on the San Jacinto County line due to channel migration. Additional spans will be added to the bridge.

Hodges and Son Construction Company, Inc. out of Omaha, Texas is serving as contractor for the $4.8 million construction project. The work is scheduled to be completed in Summer 2025, weather permitting. Crews placed construction barricades June 17 and work began soon after.

Motorists are urged to stay alert for workers and moving equipment near the lanes of traffic. Obey all traffic control in the area and prepare for delays as this work progresses.
