County discusses jail options

GROVETON — The Trinity County Commissioners Court declined to commission a study on the need for a new county jail.

At its regular meeting on June 11, Barbara Chamberlin, who has been circling a petition to get a jail bond issue before the county voters, asked the court to vote on the study.

However, County Judge Danny Martin said the county has plans in place and is completing the process toward a ballot issue. Additionally, the county formed a jail committee in 2021 and information will be presented to the committee at its next meeting.

No action was taken by the court.

In other business, the county:

• approved the renewal of employee health benefits, which reflect a 3 percent increase, with the Texas Association of Counties;

• approved a grant application for the creation of a hazard mitigation plan through the Texas Department of Emergency Management;

• approved claims and invoices for disaster-related items; • approved seeking bids for storm debris removal services and approved a committee to evaluate those proposals;

• approved a grant application for a grant from the Broadband Technical Assistance Program;

• accepted a $1,100 donation from Steely Lumber Co. to be used for road repair on Glendale Loop and Saron Cemetery Road;

• set June 25 as hearing date for a road closure request regarding a portion of McMullen Road; and

• approved bids for tax resale properties from Trinity County Appraisal District.
