GROVETON — The Groveton City Council discussed speeding on the main roads through town, and the increase in citations being written within the city.

At the May 20 meeting, Justice of the Peace Richard Steptoe said the Sheriff’s Department has started writing citations, and the funds from fines should be coming to the city soon.

Mayor Ralph Bennett said the contract with the county for law enforcement is working out pretty good, and that one of two deputies has been hired.

Bennett said with the increased patrols, the city is addressing the speed on the primary roads – 287 and U.S 94 — to slow traffic down within the city limits.

The council also is seeking to recover from the recent storms and will seek revenue and materials for street repair and to replace damaged culverts.

Bennett said that clean-up includes removing downed trees, at city residents can call the city if they need assistance.

In other business, the council:

•discussed support for the annual Lions Club Fourth of July celebration;

•swore in newly elected and re-elected members Casey Anderson, Billy Jones and Joe Don Kennedy;

•appointed Billy Jones as Mayor Pro Tem;

•approved resolutions dealing with grant requests for the city water system; and

•paid the monthly invoice for water services to Inframark at $13,175.98.
