The Bluff Creek Cemetery Association unveiled its new historical marker during a dedication ceremony May 5 held at the Bluff Creek Church on the cemetery grounds.

Phyllis Harrell welcomed and thanked all that participated in bringing the project to completion. Sherry Walker Platt led the pledges to the flags. Beth Harrell Edwards brought the dedicatory address giving timelines of the work done by Sherman Hickman on the designation narrative and application and the work of Harrell to complete the historical marker narrative and application, an endeavor to honor the heritage of family and community.

Patricia Snook spoke on behalf of the Polk County Historical Commission regarding the process of receiving a historical marker. She introduced the members of the Polk County Historical Commission who were present and the curator of the Polk County Memorial Museum, Betsy Deiterman. Snook then read the inscription on the marker, which reads: “Bluff Creek Baptist Church and Cemetery were established in the 1890s. The church building still resides on the property and is used for every homecoming. In 1897, David C. Walker, George A. Harrell, Mike McKim and John K. Walker bought the land to establish a public cemetery. At that time, there were only about 50 burials. In 1980, the cemetery was expanded with the purchase of 10 additional acres. Of the nearly 500 graves present, the oldest is that of Samuel Boice McKim (1880-1892). Veterans of military conflicts from the Civil War through the Vietnam War are buried here. This serene setting represents the legacy of hardworking, faithful and family-oriented early settlers of the community.”
