Indians earn another title

NACOGDOCHES — The Groveton Indians hammered Grapeland in a doubleheader on Saturday to claim the bi-district title.

The Sandies lost 7-3 in the first game and were blanked 6-0 in the second.

Grapeland had the lead in the first game, being ahead 3-2 in the fifth, but in the bottom of the sixth, Groveton’s offense woke up and put 5 runs on the board. With a scoreless seventh, the Indians claimed the win.

Ty Torregrossa and Jackson Cathey combined forces on the mound and tossed 7 strikeouts while allowing 8 hits.

Tanner Steubing led the offense, going 3-for-4 at the plate with 3 RBIs. Jack Sullivan chipped in 2 hits and 2 RBIs.

In the second game, Groveton opened up with a run, and it again took until the 5th inning for the Indians to start racking up points, scoring 3 runs, and adding another 2 in the 6th.

Steubing got the win on the mound, firing 10 strikeouts while allowing only 3 hits. Cathey relieved him for an inning.

Sullivan, Cash Moore and Dax Parker each had 2 hits apiece in the win, with Sullivan and Parker cracking doubles and Moore bringing in 3 RBIs.

Groveton next faces Garrison in the area round of the playoffs in Nacogdoches. Game time is 5 p.m., with the second game 30 minutes after.

Apple Springs

The Eagles’ postseason trip was cut short on Saturday, losing a series to Slocum 2-1.

The games were split on Friday, with Slocum winning the first game 11-2 but Apple Springs claiming the W 5-1 in the second game.

In Saturday’s rubber match, Slocum used an 8-run final inning at the plate to win the game 16-11.

While most of the Eagles’ batters contributed a hit, Nathan Smith and Rett Smith ponied up 2 apiece, as well as a 2-bagger each. The two also had 2 RBIs, as well as Connor Kaufman.

Nathan Smith and Tristen Eddins shared mound duty, combining for 5 strikeouts but allowing 13 hits.

Softball

The Groveton Lady Indians continue to mow down opponents in the softball tournament, taking the best of two series from Deweyville in the area round of the softball tournament.

On Thursday, Groveton won 13-1 and on Saturday, the ladies blanked the Lady Pirates 10-0.

In the first game, Landree Martin tossed 10 strikeouts while allowing only 2 hits in 6 innings, and reliever Abi Roberts tossed 2 strikeouts but gave up the sole run.

Kiki Smith led the team at the plate, going 3-for-6, while Roberts and Martin had 2 RBIs apiece and Kayleigh Albus had 3.

In the second game, Lexi Easterling had 3 hits and 3 RBIs, and Martin chipped in 3 hits and 2 RBIs to lead the offense.

Roberts took the win on the mound, tossing 4 strikeouts in the no-hitter.

Next up for Groveton is Beckville in the regional quarterfinals.
