Eagles face Orangefield Bobcats in bi-district playoff round

The Woodville Eagles baseball season ended Saturday with a defeat to Orangefield in the bi-district round of the play-offs. Woodville faced district champion Orangefield. Thursday’s game was postponed due to weather moving the series to Friday and Saturday. The Eagles fell 9-2 in game one.

In game two, the Eagles bats came alive in a 11-10 defeat of the Bobcats. Orangefield opened the scoring with two runs in the top of the first and added four more in the second to take a 6-0 lead.  Woodville would narrow the margin to four in the bottom half of the inning.  Jacob Booth would open the inning on first after being hit by a pitch.  Cael Hurst would replace Booth on a fielder’s choice. Hurst would advance to second on another hit by pitch by Kaden Saterwhite.

Hurst and Saterwhite would advance to second and third on a wild pitch.  Hurst would come home to score on an RBI by Cameron Armstrong. Saterwhite would score on an RBI ground ball to the pitcher by Christian Bean.

The third inning was the key for the Eagle victory. Pitcher Gage Tolar kept Orangefield scoreless in the first half of the inning.  Karson Fowler opened the bottom of the inning with a single to center field and stole second base. Tolar singled to left field, scoring Fowler. Tate Hickman singled to center allowing Tolar to reach home.

Booth hit a line drive double to the outfield advancing Hickman to third base.  Hurst walked to load the bases.  Satterwhite hits a ball to the pitcher, scoring Hickman.  Armstrong, Ralon Williams, and Fowler walked to fill the base paths and tack on two more runs. Tolar would increase the lead to 9-6 with a two-run shot to the middle of the field.

Orangefield would narrow the lead to 9-7 in the fourth. Both teams would go scoreless in their next at bats.

The Eagles would increase their lead to 11-7 in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Bean started the inning with a walk and advanced to second base and third base on wild pitches.  Fowler was hit by a pitch and Hickman was intentionally walked with two outs. Booth hit a line drive to center field allowing both Bean and Fowler to score.

Neither team scored in the sixth inning.  The Bobcats would tack on three more runs in the top of the sixth inning. Orangefield had bases loaded with one out when the Eagles pulled off a double play to force a game 3 in the series.

Orangefield won game three 11-0 to end the season for the Eagles.
