City, school elections Saturday

The Onalaska Independent School District and the Cities of Onalaska and Corrigan will have an election Saturday. Early voting began April 22 and concluded Tuesday.

Voters in the Onalaska Independent School District are voting on the issuance of $42 million for the construction of a new high school facility. The district has experienced tremendous growth over the last 10 years, with projected student enrollment numbers continuing to climb. The proposed project would be located beside the present Onalaska Junior-Senior High School with an expected completion of Fall 26-27.

Voters will vote “for” or “against” Proposition A – “The issuance of not to exceed $42,000,000 of Onalaska Independent School District school building bonds for the purposes of designing, constructing, and equipping school facilities, with priority given to a new high school, and the levying of a tax sufficient to pay the principal and interest on the bonds and the cost of any credit agreements. This is a property tax increase.”

The polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday at the Onalaska City Hall located at 372 FM 356 South in Onalaska, the same polling place as the City of Onalaska’s election.

Voters in the City of Onalaska will elect a mayor and two “at large” council members. Incumbent Mayor James Arnett is seeking reelection. Other individuals running for mayor are Robert F. Simard and Paul Laverty. Three people are seeking election to two “at large” seats that are presently held by Kevin Arnett and T.D. Jennings. The three people running are Kevin Arnett, J.R. Chance and Kathy Black Lott. As these are “at large” positions, the two people with the highest number of votes will be elected to the positions.

In the City of Corrigan, Position 1, which is the mayor’s position, and Positions 2 and 4 will be on the ballot. Incumbent Mayor Johnna Lowe Gibson is seeking reelection and is being challenged by Thomas J. Roberts. Bill Safford and Earlie C. Baldwin will remain in Positions 2 and 4 respectively as they are running unopposed.

The polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday at the Sechrest Webster Community Center located at 100 W. Front St. in Corrigan.
