GROVETON — With the approval of a contract, the city of Groveton will have Trinity County deputies tasked to providing law enforcement.
The contract, approved at the April 9 Commissioners Court meeting, was made effective April 1.
The contract has been a source of contention between Sheriff Woody Wallace and the court because the original proposal was for $300,000 for two years, but the court felt that it did not take into account fuel costs for patrol vehicles and wanted to add an additional $5,000 per year.
The Groveton City Council approved the modified contract at its March meeting. The full cost of the contract will be $311,760.
In other business, the court:
•proclaimed April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and also as Child Abuse Prevention Month;
•approved personnel action forms;
•approved Lockwood, Andrews & Newman as engineers for the WaterSMART grant for water and wastewater improvements in the county;
•approved selection of a committee to review proposals from firms interested in providing services for a Texas GLO grant;
•approved the application for $2 million in funds from the U.S. Department of Transportation Safe Streets 4 All grant program;
•approved the naming of a private road in Precinct 4 as Laird Lane;
•approved giving use of the old library rooms to the District Attorney’s Office; and
•approved raising septic permit fees to $325, and approved Melinda Blackstock as designated representative for septic inspections in the county.
