GROVETON — The Groveton ISD Board of Trustees approved the cancellation of the May election as only two people filed for election for the two open positions.

Superintendent Jim Dillard said that at the regular meeting March 25, the election was vacated, and in the May meeting, the new members — Kurt Minter and Robyn Watts — will be sworn in to replace Board President Mark Folds, who is retiring, and board member Benny Abshier, who opted not to run.

The outgoing members’ terms expire in May.

Once the new members are sworn in, the board will reorganize and select a president, vice president and secretary.

In other business, the board:

•approved the renewal of contract employees;

•gave approval for Dillard to execute new employee contracts without board discussion; and

•approved the purchase of new intercom systems for both campuses. Dillard said  they are operating with old equipment, and some rooms don’t have the ability to communicate with front office. Also there are no external speakers to alert people outside of emergencies. The upgrades are expected to cost $60,000.
