Coldspring Chamber of Commerce will host its annual awards banquet for the Best of San Jacinto County on Saturday. If you have not got tickets for this yet, you can buy them at the door, but it is better to call the Chamber and order them to give the caterers a final number.
Tickets for members are $20 and non-members $30. The venue is the Jones Complex in Coldspring, and the event starts at 6 p.m.
•San Jacinto County Senior Center held its Talent Show last Saturday. It was a sold-out event and a great success. Everyone enjoyed the funny skits and the singers were excellent, each one different but all being heartily applauded.
Patsy Cline, who came in the body of Charline Smith, performed a perfect skit of ‘She’s Got You’ and brought down the house. Many of the regulars who eat at the Center performed in varying skits, including a fashion parade and “The Retiree.”
The Church Ladies sang “Amazing Grace,” Sandra Shoultz did “God Bless The USA,” Gregg Cones sang “Your Man” and Ken Janik performed “The Chain of Love.” We were all happy to see Ken back again after his recent illness.
Some of the skits were taken from old but good skits from the likes of Abbott & Costello, where Jim Moore and Joe Campbell updated “Who’s on First” into a computer store trying to make customer understand the lingo. Charline and Marcy Campbell did the “$65 Funeral” from Jack Paar’s show and the “Baby Photographer” with Kristie Fraga and Joe Campbell was absolutely hilarious. “Ajax Airlines” had Diane Clevenger as airline clerk trying to book Roger Short on a plane. Needless to say, she didn’t succeed. It was a dinner and show night with the sponsor being Sheriff Greg Capers who enjoyed the evening with his parents and wife.
•Scholarships for High School graduates this year will be judged in late April. Coldspring students will find the forms online; ask Counselor Kathryn Pedigo for information.
Shepherd students may print off their forms or collect one from the Shepherd Library. As always, the scholarship winners will be announced at the awards night at each school.
•Don’t forget to vote if you have not done so yet. Voting is on March 5.
•Friends of Shepherd Library will hold a fundraiser on May 18 at Shepherd Community Center. If you want to know more, go to their website and Facebook page. There will be trophies for the winners with the best chili.
•Coldspring has CareShare food pantry and Shepherd has Helping Hands Food Pantry. The latter is having a new building set alongside the old house which has problems. Through the generous donation by Glenn and Cindy Dillon, the First Baptist Church was able to have a larger metal building erected and this will soon be open to the public. It is next door to the old house which served well for years.
It has taken a lot of hard work by many volunteers to make this possible. Local builder Doug Rhoden built it, and it will be called the Rand McIntyre Helping Hands Food Pantry, with an opening date sometime in May. Shirley Rand and Linda McIntyre were two stalwarts who put so much energy into the food pantry for which they saw a great need. Other churches help with donations as do businesses. Anyone can donate, go to the FBC website to find out more.
Many people worked to make this expansion possible. Shirley Rand is very modest about her own part in this. McIntyre passed away some time ago but she was a mover and shaker, too, like Shirley Rand who is a retired teacher, as is her husband, and altogether she taught in many different schools with a total of 41 years teaching. She says she loves meeting people and finds great satisfaction in the work at Helping Hands.
When the big day comes to open the new pantry, it will be a dream come true for her and many others who have worked so hard.
