WOODVILLE – The Tyler County Commissioners Court adopted a slate of new countywide procedures for electrical services permits for new construction during a special meeting last Wednesday.

Tyler County Judge Milton Powers said that there was some confusion that arose on social media about the matter. Powers explained the process, that for new construction, a permit must be obtained before any type of service will be provided through Entergy Texas or Sam Houston Electrical Company.

This takes effect on Jan. 1, 2024, and basic permits will cost $25, and permits in a flood zone will cost $50, and the permits are issued through the Emergency Operations Center. Permits requested for inside a flood zone area need additional paperwork and signatures.

Powers said “we’re not here to just charge away, or tax away,” and said that in adopting the permit fee structure, Tyler County went lower than other counties in the area.

The one-time permits are required by electric service providers, and not by the county.

Other Business

During the special-called meeting, the commissioners also voted to approve an inmate housing agreement for overflow inmates to Beauregard Parish, LA, at the cost of $60 per inmate.

Tyler County Sheriff Bryan Weatherford said that about five other sheriffs in the region are using the service for housing at Beauregard Parish, as it is a cheaper service than other agencies.

The facility only takes male inmates, Weatherford said, and having the ability to house them elsewhere helps Tyler County, he added. The cost comes at a price of $15 cheaper than San Jacinto County, where the Tyler County has a housing agreement, currently.

Weatherford also addressed the court to clarify a policy change regarding the payment of staff with the Tyler County Sheriff’s Office for holidays and vacation time, which will allow them to be paid as opposed to permitting them from taking time off work.
