Jackets, Lady Jackets take third in Apple Springs tourney

The Yellowjacket basketball teams traveled to Kennard for a pre-district game. The Lady Jackets started the evening off with a 36-24 win. Abby Grimes led with 12 points and was 100% at the free throw line. Sydney Brock was next with eight points. Kyli Handley had 6, Ty Cochran had five, Blakeney Whitworth had three and Saydi Handley helped with two points. The boys did not do as well, despite effort.

At the end of the week both boys and girls teams traveled to Apple Springs for three-day tournament play. The Lady Jackets started the tournament on Thursday beating Oakwood in overtime play 32-31. Juniors Sydney Brock and Kyli Handley each scored 11 points, Abby Grimes scored 6, Blakeney Whitworth had 4, and Saydi Handley made both of her free throws to end with 2 points. On Friday 2 key players were out due to illness and injury which did not help when they played Central JV. The Lady Jackets ultimately lost by 2, 23-25. Abby Grimes led with 8 points, Sydney Brock had 7, Ty Cochran with 4, Blakeney Whitworth had 3, and Emma Byrd made 1 free throw. This loss put them playing Leggett for 3rd place. Abby Grimes led, scoring 13 points with Blakeney Whitworth and Ty Cochran right behind, each scoring 12 points. Sydney Brock was shut down by the defense only scoring 4 points, and Emma Byrd contributed with two points.

The Yellowjackets came out on top against Leggett JV on Thursday. Jesse Bittick was the high scorer with 12. Kasen Citrano was close behind with 10. Brad Davison had 9, Hunter Luther had 8. PJ Purvis, Jaxon Gay, Cutter Lowe each had 4, Bryson Swanson had 3, and Turner Johnson had 2. On Friday the Jackets played a tough Apple Springs team and lost 19-54. Jesse Bittick led with 8, Brad Davison and Kasen Citrano each had 4, Hunter Luther finished with 3 points. Saturday was the game to watch with the Yellowjackets beating Little Centerville in the fourth quarter on a buzzer beater by Kasen Citrano. The score was 40-39. Brad Davison led with 14 points, Hunter Luther had 10 points, Jesse Bittick ended with eight points, Jaxon Gay and Kasen Citrano both finished with four points.

Both teams brought home third place in the tournament. Sydney Brock, Abby Grimes, Hunter Luther, and Brad Davison each earned All-Tournament honors.

This week the Lady Jackets will host Spurger for their first district game and the boys will travel to Little Centerville early in the week. Thursday through Saturday they will take a short trip down 1745 to participate in the Colmesneil tournament.

 

Volleyball continues for Byrd, Read

Volleyball season continues for two Lady Jackets and Coach Tonnies. Juniors Emma Byrd and Lily Read, were named to the Pineywoods All-Star team and will play on Saturday Dec. 9, 7 p.m. at Lufkin High School.

Coach Courtney Tonnies was also selected as one of the coaches for the North Region. This game is made up mostly of Seniors from the Deep East Texas area. They are divided into two teams, North and South. The North Region team consists of schools from Central Heights, Rusk, Lufkin, Jacksonville, Hudson, Garrison, Palestine, Timpson and Hemphill.

Schools from the South Region are Chester, Diboll, Groveton, Huntington, Hudson, Livingston, and Madisonville. Coach Tonnies is excited to be able to play another game post season with the area schools and feels honored that herself and two Lady Jackets were selected to represent Chester High School.
