NACOGDOCHES — For the lack of a touchdown, the postseason hopes of the Groveton Indians were dashed after a 35-28 loss to Shelbyville in the bi-district round of the 2A playoffs on Friday.

Coaches said the boys played hard, but came up just short of winning the game, a tough feat considering the weather.

Still the tandem of Tanner Steubing and Bryon Thomas proved formidable, with Thomas racking up 203 yards on 26 carries and posting 3 TDs.

Steubing completed 12 of 15 passes for 164 yards and 1 TD.

For receivers, Jackson Cathey pulled in 8 catches for 120 yards and 1 TD; Billy Thomas had 2 catches for 30 yards; and Bryon Thomas had 2 catches for 14 yards.

On the ground, Bryon Thomas had 26 carries for 203 yards and 3 TDs; Tanner Steubing had 5 carries for 45 yards; Wyatt Snead had 2 carries for 27 yards; and Darius McQueen had 2 carries for 6 yards.

On defense, Wyatt Snead had 9 tackles; Tanner Steubing had 8 tackles, 1 caused fumble; Daiton Chandler had 6 tackles; Gunner Wilson had 6 tackles; Carter Cox had 4 tackles, 1 sack; Trystian Ard had 3 tackles, 2 sacks, 1 recovered fumble; Jackson Cathey had 3 tackles; Logan Townsend had 2 tackles, 1 sack; Darius McQueen had 2 tackles; and Brody Thorton had 1 tackle.

Apple Springs

The Eagles’ postseason was short-lived following a 61-12 loss to Bynum on Friday.

Apple Springs ended its season fourth in the district with a 4-7 overall record.

Head Coach Cody Moree said that although the season has ended, it was a great one.

“For this group of seniors to put us back in the playoffs and overcome all the adversity they had as younger students is truly remarkable,” he said. “Eagle Football is back and we plan to stay a while.”

Quarterback Dakota Campbell completed 13 of 26 passes for 145 yards and 2 TDs, both of which were caught by senior Connor Kaufman.

Defensive leaders were Noah Thompson with 10 tackles, Bradyn Kaufman with 7 and Andrew Pion with 6
