Held in Shepherd Community Center, Mayor Charles Minton delivered a short speech of welcome to the officers and swore in new Police Chief Clint Headley, Assistant Police Chief Tammy Nave and Deputy Mark Gustafson, as well as 12 reserve officers.
These reserve officers are unpaid by the city and will patrol as well as direct traffic when needed. Their presence will help maintain law and order in the growing community.
Headley spoke in glowing terms of all the help he had received from Constable Ray Atchley, who is still part of the Sheriff’s Department. Sheriff Gregg Capers said he regretted losing Gustafson to Shepherd but said he understood that we must each pursue our own pathway.
Headley introduced Nave, who told us her experience included deployment in Iraq and Afghanistan. She has much more to tell which I will write about soon, but she was also on President Bush’s Bomb Squad, the team which went ahead of his trips abroad to check his security.
It was a splendid ceremony. I use the word splendid purposefully, since the whole gathering of law enforcement was very impressive.
•State Rep. Ernest Bailes welcomed business owners and managers to a breakfast at his Shepherd Office on Sept. 19. This was a well-attended group and Ernest gave a talk on what is going on at the Capitol, including the fact that Gov. Greg Abbott was thinking of holding extra sessions at any time.
These breakfasts are very useful to Ernest since he is able to talk and listen to many people over the course of the hour or so. They in turn get to hear from others in business and can swap stories. Coffee and kolaches were supplied by William LaCoste of Texas Grill in Shepherd.

•This was a busy day for Bailes, who came to Coldspring Chamber of Commerce Lunch as did some of the other breakfast attendees. Lunch was cooked and served by the COCISD Culinary Department, headed by Chef Joel Casiday.
Barbara Justice, President of Coldspring Chamber, gave her State of the Chamber speech which she said would be her last one, since she is not running for office again. She is heavily involved in many other organizations as well as working for the Alabama-Coushatta Tribe.
The speech outlined the work done by the Chamber over the last year and more and referenced the remodeling of the Chamber Office, the building of an adjacent storage unit and the great success of the Wolf Creek Car Show and the Award Banquet, the Best of Banquet. The dining room was full and the meal delicious as always. I particularly loved the bread pudding with strawberries and pecans.
•Somehow my photo of the Women’s League ribbon cutting did not arrive at the newspaper. I am including it this week to show how so many ladies showed up for the first lunch of the new season.
Next month, Oct. 12, the theme will be Halloween, so the tables will be decorated accordingly. Lunch will be catered by Lucy’s Country Kitchen.
•Speaking of Halloween, SJC Historical Commission will hold its annual scary weekend Oct. 27-29. The Haunted Jailhouse is always a big draw for children and adults. Parents are asked to bring very young children early in the evening, as later it gets really scary.
•You may have seen a segment on TV this last week on San Jacinto Dog Shelter with Constable Sam Houston rescuing a number of dogs who were in need of help. Working with the Houston Humane Society, Channel 2 rode along with the rescue.

All this week the SJC Rodeo has been attracting visitors to the Fairgrounds in Coldspring. Don’t forget the Last Dance is a great chance to celebrate the rodeo till next year comes around. Held. Coldspring FFA Boosters present Party Night with DJ Joe LeBlanc.
Admission is $10, starting at 9 p.m. The Last Dance will be a great way to enjoy the weekend.
