WOODVILLE – The Woodville chapter of Sleep in Heavenly peace is proud to report that it reached a milestone number last weekend at its monthly bed-building day.
According to SHP co-president Brian Smith, the organization reached the mark of 700 beds built, and that day notched 709 beds. All of this was accomplished, Smith said, in 35 months, since the chapter formed locally.
“All beds are volunteer, hand-built, solid wood, plus new mattresses, pillow and bedding,” he said.
SHP’s Woodville chapter took part in the national organization’s “Bunks Across America” event, where all chapters of SHP build as many bunk beds as possible in one day.
According to SHP’s national website, the event is the “largest bed-building event in a single day,” and through local and national sponsorships, SHP is able “to put a real dent in the national child bedlessness crisis.”
SHP’s motto is “No kid sleeps on the floor in our town.” It is a mission that the organization takes seriously, and one that touched Smith’s heart when he first learned of the organization and its work.
There are currently more than 200 chapters of SHP in the United States, and the goal of this year’s “Bunks Across America,” nationally, was for each chapter to build 30 beds.
SHP is having its monthly bed build next on Saturday, Oct. 14, from 7:45 a.m. to noon, at its workshop location on 302 S. Pecan Street in Woodville.
Aside from volunteers, SHP is currently needing bedding. According to Smith, the best option for those looking to donate is the all-in-one “bedding in a bag” sets, which has all of the accoutrements that volunteers need to be able to grab and take to deliveries.
The drop-off location for the bedding is 1905 S. Magnolia in Woodville.
