Goodrich children needing beds?

Any children living in the Goodrich zip code of 77335 who do not have beds of their own in which to sleep are eligible to apply for a bed through Sleep in Heavenly Peace.

Sleep in Heavenly Peace is a 100% volunteer organization that provides handmade bunk beds to children that don’t have beds of their own. Not only are the beds handmade and personally delivered, but the program is volunteer driven and partners with organizations, churches, businesses and individuals to build them at events that are called ‘Build Days.’

The organization was founded in 2012 in Idaho Falls with one man and one bed and one family, although the program didn’t see a lot of growth until 2017 when it was featured on a Mike Rowe show called “Returning the Favor.” The program has chapters in the U.S., Canada, Bermuda and the Bahamas and overall, the organization has built 40,876 beds and added 46 new chapters in 2022.

One of those new chapters is the Polk County Chapter, headed up by Co-Presidents Kaycee Hendrix and Kim Jernigan. As the new local chapter is in its infancy, organizers have chosen to tackle one zip code at a time and are starting with the Goodrich area.

Application may be made on the website – https://shpbeds.org/chapter/tx-polk-co/ -- and shortly thereafter, contact will be made with the family. No questions are asked about money. They simply want to know on what the children are presently sleeping.

“Our mission is ‘No kid sleeps on the floor in our town!’ We are an organization that builds and delivers beds to children in need of a bed and a safe place to sleep,” Hendrix said.

“Our chapter is a 100% volunteer organization. Your donation stays in our community and serves kiddos right here. All funds are used to build and deliver our fully furnished beds to kiddos. Our expenses include tools, lumber and hardware for ‘Build Days’ and new mattresses, bedding and pillows for deliveries,” Hendrix said.
