WOODVILLE – The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2033, of Woodville, is planning a weekend-long event to commemorate Patriot Day this year.
According to VFW Post Commander Mike King, the event will last from Saturday, Sept. 9 through Sunday, Sept. 10., and will include vendors, food trucks and live music. King added that in addition to room for vendors, all first responders are invited to come and set up their vehicles.
King said the VFW is still looking for participants, including vendors and musicians. The entertainment confirmed so far includes Tyler County-based blues-rockers Texas .357 and Atlanta, Texas-based band Stevie Ray and the Deacons.
The event will take place at Veterans Park, which is located adjacent to the VFW post, at 301 Veterans Wat in Woodville.
Patriot Day occurs on Sept. 11 each year to honor the memory of the people killed in the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Then President George W. Bush proclaimed Friday, 14, 2001 as a National Day of Prayer and Remembrance for the victims of the attacks, and later that year, a resolution was passed to proclaims Sept. 11 as Patriot Day, and it was first honored on Sept. 11, 2002.
Although Patriot Day is not a federal holiday, memorial ceremonies are often held by groups such as the VFW, and many volunteer and service opportunities are granted through the day of memorial.
In addition, since Bush left office, former Presidents Barack Obama and Donald Trump also continued to proclaim the Sept. 11 day as Patriot Day each year, and President Joe Biden has continued to do so.
King said spots for vendors are $20 apiece for the weekend, and the VFW organizers are looking to fill up the nearly five acres of land that the park occupies. Another feature of the weekend’s event, King said, includes plans to host a sunrise service that Sunday morning.
