Lovelady girls off to 3-0 district start

LOVELADY — The Lovelady Lady Lions are off to an impressive start to their District 20-2A basketball campaign.

After winning their first two games on the road against Latexo 66-16 and Groveton 74-38, the Lady Lions handled Leon 66-45 in their first home appearance last Friday.

Leon was able to keep Lovelady within reach for the first half but couldn't keep up the pace after halftime.

Lovelady only led 19-14 after a quarter and 31-26 at the break before taking charge in the third with a 19-5 run for a 50-31 advantage.

Sophomore Lexi Price scored 25 points and reached the 1,000-point career milestone during the game. She joins junior teammate Aaliyah Jones in the 1000-point club.

Price booked 4 treys, 8 rebounds, 5 assists and 9 steals against Leon.

Jones rounded out double figures with 14 points (2 treys), 4 rebounds and 2 steals.

Shelby Pugh finished with 9 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists and 5 steals. Kylie Pugh was right behind with 8 points and 5 rebounds .

Haley Davidson had 5 points, 2 rebounds and 3 assists; Haley Shupak scored 3 points and Addi Carney chipped in 2 points and 4 rebounds.

Opening district with Latexo on Jan. 6, the Lady Lions jumped out to a 19-3 lead and went on to win 66-16.

It was 36-9 at halftime and 52-12 after three.

Price recorded a double-double with 26 points and 12 rebounds in addition to 6 assists and 7 steals

Jones rounded out double figures with 13 points while also booking 3 rebounds, 3 assists, and 4 steals.

Davidson had 9 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists and 6 steals

Also contributing for the Lady Lions were Diara Woods with 6 points and 5 rebounds; Shelby Pugh with 5 points, 10 rebounds and 3 steals; Shupak with 4 points and 4 rebounds; Carney with 2 points and 5 rebounds and Kylie Pugh with 1 point, 5 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals and 2 blocks.

Playing Groveton last Tuesday, the Lady Lions turned in another dominating performance in a 74-38 victory.

The first quarter told the story as Lovelady grabbed a 27-8 lead and stretched it to 47-20 at the break.

Groveton matched Lovelady's 10 points in the third quarter but the Lady Lions closed out the game with a 17-8 run.

Price scorched the nets for 32 points, 7 rebounds, 8 assists and 7 steals.

Jones was next in scoring with 19 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals

Davidson finished with 8 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals

Shelby Pugh was the top rebounder with 10 and chipped in with 5 points and 4 steals.

Shupak had 5 points and 2 rebounds while Kylie Pugh finished with 5 points and 5 rebounds.

Lovelady continued district play Tuesday at Grapeland and will host Centerville on Friday to finish the first round.
