Speed limits to change on 150

COLDSPRING — After a study on speed limits on Highway 150 was completed by TxDOT, the Coldspring City Council has passed an ordinance that lowers the speed limit to 35 around the elementary school.

Mayor John Benestante said the council accepted the study at the Aug. 7 meeting, and the section of road affected runs from FM 2025 to the James Street Elementary School.

Texas Department of Transportation will install the signs once the ordinance is received.

Benestante said a similar study is planned for Highway 156 from the intersection with 150 to past Lincoln Junior High School.

In other business, the council:

•discussed construction at the Dixie League sports complex, which should be done around early October. Additionally, the council in renewing its liability insurance added the fields;

•approved sending notice of violation of city nuisance ordinances to the owner of the property at 301 Highway 150;

•authorized the city attorney to pursue other avenues against the owners of the property at 210 Slade St. for violations of the nuisance statutes;

•discussed a sign ordinance regarding the placement of signs on property not connected with a business;

•approved seeking bids for upgrading the Pea Patch lift station;

•discussed the creation of an economic development corporation;

•discussed an ordinance banning food trucks parking in spaces in the city right of way, as well as issuing day permits for food trucks parking on private property;

•discussed enforcement of city ordinances through the municipal court system;

•approved closing Highway 150 and FM 1514 for the annual San Jacinto County Fair & Rodeo parade; and

•authorized the mayor to develop a salary schedule for employees.
