Hundreds of Angelina County residents packed the George H. Henderson, Jr. Expo Center to honor Coach Bud Maddux, his entourage of coaches, and the players of the Thundering Thirteen, the Lufkin Little League All Stars, who now also bear the title USA Little League World Series Champions. Each player, Coach Bud Maddux, Coaches Deason and Deaton each received a prominent entry in to the Expo Center in the back of pickups provided by local car dealerships amid music playing chosen by them. Danny Merrill emceed as school officials from Lufkin, Hudson, and Diboll added their paeans of praise on the team for their exceptional season which ended in the championship game against Japan on Sunday, August 27th in Williamsport, Pennsylvania for Little League World Series World Championship. Dignitaries headed up the list of speakers as Lufkin Mayor Bob Brown, State Representative Trent Ashby, and State School Board member Dr. Keven Ellis praised the team and coaches for a job well done. Ashby gave the coaches and players a flag that flew over the Capitol in Austin on the Saturday they won the USA championship. Brookshire Brothers executives gave framed copies of the Thundering Thirteen rally rags to the players and coaches and informed the audience of what they had given to support them. Mr. Mitchell gave players engraved purple pocket knives, and his daughter lent her support for their achievements. Terry Fauble and Valena Spradley of Austin Bank gave bats with Thundering Thirteen on them to the team and coaches. In front of the stage, different Angelina County schools posted their cheerleaders, cheer squads, and drill teams to rev the celebration up. The Lufkin High School band provided music and played the Star Spangled Banner to kick off the event. Finally, Coach Bud Maddux, a forty-one year baseball coach veteran, addressed the audience, being careful to applaud the character, respectfulness, work ethic, and achievements of the team. He ended with a heartwarming affirmation of love and support for the players he had so tenaciously coached and overseen through the season. The tribute was a fitting community response to a long but fruitful season for the USA Little League Champions— the Thundering Thirteen.
