Two incumbents defeated in local school board elections

COLDSPRING – Two school board elections and one city election was decided Saturday in San Jacinto County during the May 10 Uniform Elections conducted by cities and school districts. In the Coldspring-Oakhurst Consolidated Independent School Board of Trustees election incumbent Janice Wyatt lost her bid for re-election to Position 5 to Pat Johnson. Johnson won 596 votes to beat Wyatt who had 383 votes. Wyatt served two terms on the school board before being defeated.
During her tenure she chaired the facilities committee and made recommendations to prioritize maintenance projects that needed to be completed. She also served as vice president of the board. Johnson, a former airline pilot, became involved with local schools teaching a four week program called “Adopt a Pilot.” He has worked as a substitute teacher since retirement. He believes that it is imperative for a school board to defi ne realistic plans and goals and support the superintendent to insure that those goals are achieved. During his campaign, Johnson said he would work to keep quality teachers and fi ght for equitable pay. In Position 6 on the C-OCISD School Board election incumbent David Swanson received 507 votes to beat his opponent Lynn Redden who got 437 votes.
Incumbent Fred Taylor received 490 votes to keep Position 7 on the board. His opponent, David Henry, got 433 votes. In the Shepherd Independent School Board of Trustees election incumbent David Brown lost his bid for re-election to Position 5 to opponent Michael Flynt. Brown received 61 votes while Flynt got 98. David Smith ran unopposed for Position 4. He received 112 votes. Point Blank city election Incumbent Clyde Chandler received 88 votes to beat his opponent Mack Bruno in the Point Blank city election. Bruno received 33 votes. Councilmen Bill Metzger and Larry Gumpert ran unopposed. Metzger received 94 votes and Gumpert got 96 votes. Gumpert was appointed by the council to fi ll the position formerly held by Gary Wodley.
