Shepherd's Tyler Kolek picked by Marlins

SHEPHERD – It's a rare occasion that a high school senior learns he's been drafted by a major league baseball (MLB) team the day before he is to graduate, but that is exactly what happened to Shepherd High School's Tyler Kolek. The 18-year-old right-hander is known for not giving up a hit and had 35 strikeouts over 15 innings during his first three starts of his senior year. Not many were surprised when Kolek was picked by the Miami Marlins in the second pick of the 2014 MLB Draft. Kolek stands a formidable 6'5" and weighs 230 pounds. He has a fastball that regularly reaches 100 mph, promising to give the Marlins another power arm. "Every game that he pitched in this year, I don't think there was one game that he didn't hit 100 miles per hour multiple times," Shepherd head baseball coach Josh Jackson said. Jackson said he throws a slider some, but he relies on his curveball more. According to sources, Kolek missed most of his junior season after breaking his left arm during a game over spring break. When he started throwing two months later, that's when he hit triple digits for the first time. The next step for Kolek will be to sign a contract with the Marlins and then report to their Gulf Coast League team. There, the journey to Miami begins in earnest, but is likely Miami will have to wait a while to see him in the majors.
