Magee named ‘Judge of Year’
San Jacinto News- Times - August 2008

POINT BLANK -- The Texas Justice Court Judges Association (JCJ) recently named San Jacinto County Precinct 4 Justice of the Peace Greg Magee Judge of the Year. In making the announcement at the association’s annual conference, Chairman of the Scholarship and Awards Committee Judge Mitch Shamburger of Smith County said, “Judge Magee has been a dedicated and active member of this Association since its inception and continues to provide his time and efforts toward the betterment of justice courts throughout the state. “As a board member for JCJ, his leadership ability is evident to all of us at the board meetings. He has provided hours and hours of legal research on a number of issues our board has been involved with the last two years.

“Judge Magee is not quick to jump onto any bandwagon, but instead carefully explores the many sides of an issue before expressing his opinion, and all of us who know him, listen with respect to what he says. This is one of the reasons he is such a valued member of our board of directors. “Judge Magee understands that justice court judges need a network of their peers to seek advice, receive assurance, and look for answers to judicial questions from more experienced judges. He instituted and directs the JCJ ‘ListServ’ so that all of us have the opportunity to network and have those conversations in a timely manner. “

Judge Magee is a creative and forward thinker and it’s a privilege to have him working with this Association and for the benefi t of all Texas justice court judges. Although Judge Magee never seeks out attention to himself, he draws others to him with his quiet confi dence, his ready smile and his clever humor. Judge Magee has given a lot of his time and effort with his work for this association, but he does it for the benefi t of all of us who serve as justice court judges.” “I was very honored and shocked at receiving my association’s Judge of the Year,” Magee said, adding, “upon accepting the award I told the group I would remember that day as the day Greg Magee was speechless.” In addition to receiving the honor, Magee was elected to serve the association as vice president. In this position, Magee will chair the Justice Court Education Committee that is responsible for developing curriculum and standards for the education of judges and clerks to meet statutory requirements and to monitor the implementation of the education programs to insure effectiveness.

“I am just honored and excited to be serving as vice president. I have made education a major part of my life and I am very excited to play a part in the educational process of justices of the peace and clerks throughout Texas,” Magee said. “Our association has worked hard to develop programs whereby Texas judges are trained, not by other judges, but by leading experts in the law. With education comes professionalism and with professionalism comes integrity,” Magee said. The Texas Justice Court Judges Association (JCJ) is dedicated to the educational and legislative needs of Texas Justice Courts. The JCJ, whose motto is “Excellence and Integrity,” has as its priority, education; believing better education, delivered in a cost effective manner, is the key to improving the image and the quality of Texas Justice Courts.
