Driver killed at RR crossing

NEW WILLARD – The driver of an 18-wheeler was pronounced dead at the scene where his truck collided with an oncoming train Wednesday morning near Leggett. At approximately 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Wayne Edward Baldwin, 58, of Louisiana, was attempting to cross the railroad tracks near the Stella Jones Mill into Loop 116 and reportedly failed to yield for a southbound train. According to reports, Baldwin had just droppedoff a load at a lumber yard and tried to drive through the private railroad crossing, which does not include a gate or signal lights. The 18-wheeler was smashed on the driver's side and dragged along the railroad tracks until the train came to a stop, with Baldwin's body still pinned inside the cab. A rescue crew from Livingston Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to the scene, along with local EMS. Deputies with the Polk County Sheriff's Office also arrived for investigation, along with assistance from Texas Highway Patrol. Baldwin was later pronounced dead at the scene and transported by a first-call vehicle for medical examination. The accident is under the investigation of the Polk County Sheriff's Office.
