Mayor Pro Tem Muriel Williams, who represented Precinct 4 on the Crockett City Council, has resigned. Williams emailed a brief letter of resignation to city officials Monday, July 3, stating she was resigning immediately – effective on that date – City Secretary Mitzi Thompson told the Courier Thursday, July 6. Williams also recently resigned from her position as manager of Pine Ridge Manor apartments in Crockett. Thompson said Williams did not state a reason for her resignation, however, Williams recently accepted a new job in Tyler and is believed to have already moved out of town. Her resignation letter simply stated, "Effective immediately, July 3, I'm resigning as mayor pro tem," said Thompson. "We're going to miss her. She was a good friend and a good councilperson. She did a lot of good things," Thompson said. In an email message to the Courier, Thompson added, "We will miss her but wish her well in her new endeavor." Addressing Williams' resignation and naming a replacement is on the agenda for the Monday, July 10, meeting of the city council. Williams isn't expected to attend the meeting. Williams was first appointed to the council in 2012, signing her oath of office Nov. 9 that year, Thompson said, adding Williams became mayor pro tem when former Mayor Robert Meadows, ascended from the position to the mayor's office by appointment June 11, 2014. Concerning Williams' resignation, Meadows said, "First off, my feelings go out for the citizens. It's a sad day for the citizens. She was very much a strong advocate for progress in Crockett and for the citizens in general. "She had great wisdom that I gleaned from when I could. It was an honor to have served with her, but as I understand, she has taken a job that betters her situation and I can certainly understand considering her family's well-being first. I enjoyed her humor and her wisdom. I really did. She is a very sharp lady
