Jury Hands Down Guilty Verdict In Lovelady Bank Robbery Case

By Lynda Jones

One of three defendants accused of entering the Lovelady State Bank on Dec. 17, 2015, terrorizing employees and taking an undisclosed amount of cash, was found guilty of aggravated robbery in a Houston County District Courtroom Thursday, May 4. Houston County District Attorney Donna Gordon Kaspar said the jury only deliberated 15 minutes before returning the guilty verdict against Alonso Donell Irving, 28, of Houston. Friday morning, May 5, the jury reconvened to hear additional evidence for the sentencing phase of the trial and then issued a 45-year sentence to be completed in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice Institutional Division. During that 2015 bank robbery, Irving and two other suspects, all armed and masked, entered the bank at approximately 10:30 a.m. on Dec. 17, 2015. The other two suspects are Ryan Scott and Allus Hubbard. A bank teller and a bank bookkeeper required hospital treatment for wounds sustained in the robbery, allegedly at the hands of Scott. Hubbard testified during Irving's trial, which began Tuesday afternoon, May 2. District Attorney Donna Kaspar said Hubbard's testimony, along with DNA evidence, was enough to convince the jury of Irving's guilt. "After finding the defendant guilty, the jury heard evidence that Mr. Irving was on a deferred adjudiction probation for money laundering when he committed the bank robbery," Kaspar said. Thus, the jury determined Irving should serve 45 years in TDCJ.
