GISD Taps Don Jackson
By Alton Porter
Don Jackson, Grapeland Elementary School principal, is the Lone Finalist for the Grapeland Independent School District's (GISD) superintendent position, which is being vacated by retiring Superintendent Gregg Spivey. After meeting for about a hour and a half in executive session during a special meeting on Friday, April 7, the GISD School Board reopened the meeting to the public and unanimously voted to pass a motion offered by Board Member Melissa Cobb and seconded by Board Member James Martin to name Jackson for the position. Board President Eddie Childress said Jackson has 14-plus years of experience as a school administrator, and has served three stints with GISD – as coach, teacher and most recently for little over a year in the principal position at GES. In addition to being employed in GISD, he worked in schools in Woodville, Lufkin and Jacksonville. "We had four great candidates (who were selected to interview) for the position," said Childress. "We've met for several hours to look at all the information from all the candidates.... And after lots of discussion, we feel like Don Jackson is the man that we're going to choose to lead up Grapeland ISD in the future. We felt as a board a local individual is always a good decision."
