Veterans' "Stand Down" to be held in Lufkin
The Deep East Texas Council of Governments and the Charles Wilson Outpatient Clinic are holding a Veterans Stand Down to assist homeless Veterans, Veterans and Veteran families. The event is scheduled for Thursday, April 20, 2017 at the Pitser Garrison Convention Center in Lufkin. The DETCOG Regional Housing Authority HUD-VASH event aims to provide Veterans with the housing and wraparound services they need to successfully exit homelessness. The free Stand Down event will have government agencies, faith-based organizations, housing providers, nonprofit agencies, and local businesses that can connect homeless Veterans with permanent supportive housing. Other services available will follow intensive case management; benefits eligibility screening, employment, legal assistance, and mental health services. Additionally, the event will have speakers informing the audience on legislative changes, an attorney to address veteran benefits and discharge, a speaker addressing protecting one's assets, free health checkups, vendors and giveaways. The event is open to all Veterans, family and friends. The public is encouraged to "Adopt- A-Vet" on April 20, and bring them to the event. Sign-in will begin at 9:00 a.m. and presentations will begin at 9:30. Veterans are encouraged to bring their identification.
