Man charged with two counts of elder abuse

CORRIGAN – One man is behind bars and authorities are looking for another suspect in relation to charges of abuse against an elderly person. Steven Edward Knight was arrested on charges of exploitation of an elderly/disabled person and of forgery of a financial instrument. Knight's charges stem from a complaint made to Corrigan Police Department from a home health nurse who is caring for Knight's mother, Darlene Harrison Knight. On last Thursday, Corporal Bolton with Corrigan PD, was dispatched to an address on James Street concerning a $40,000. Chief Gibson said the a p p r o x i - mate damages amount to $39,000 to the park, which opened in September of 2014. In addition to the two initial charges, Botley is now being held on a second-degree felony arson charge and a thirddegree felony criminal mischief charge. His bonds total $35,000. BOTLEY welfare check. When Bolton arrived, he observed a white female outside of the residence. The female was identified as Christian Wood, an RN with Kindred Hospice. W o o d t o l d B o l t o n t h a t she had s e v e r a l compla ints regarding unusual activity in the residence, including drug use and fraud by a caregiver, whom she identified as Steven Knight. Wood said she'd checked on her patient in the residence, Darlene Knight, and noticed that three prescription medications were missing: hydrocodone, Xanax, and morphine. All three prescriptions, Wood said, had been filled and picked up from the pharmacy the previous week. After further investigation by Officer Bolton, the medications were not found and Darlene Knight stated that she had not had any of her medications in several days. Knight was arrested the following day and booked into Polk County Jail on the two initial charges. According to Corrigan PD Chief Darrell Gibson, more charges are coming, as the investigation is ongoing, and a warrant has been issued for Jamie Lee Brown in connection with the crimes. Brown, the former daughter-in-law of the victim, is also wanted on exploitation and forgery charges. Knight's bonds currently total $35,000. According to information on the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services website, elder abuse is broadly defined and includes, but is not limited to: physical and sexual abuse, neglect, exploitation, emotional abuse, and abandonment. The site states "each year hundreds of thousands of older persons are abused, neglected, and exploited." Elder abuse can be reported by calling the Adult Protective Services agency within the victim's jurisdiction. A hotline, 1-800-677-1116 can refer a caller to the nearest agency for assistance.
