Chester ISD calls tax rate election

Tyler County Booster

By Michael G. Maness

Chester ISD will seek voter approval for a 13-cent tax increase to meet expenses for the 2016-18 school year. The board of trustees ticked off the first in a series of tasks necessary to implement the increase with a public hearing Monday. Superintendent Cory Hines the increase in the maintenance and operations tax rate from $1.04 to $1.17 per $100 in value. The only citizen present was Chuck Davidson who said during public comments that he approved of tax increase. The board entered into an agreement with the Tyler County Clerk's office to handle the election. The voting date was set for Aug. 26 with early voting to be Aug. 9-22 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Hines announced that the new roof for the elementary school and cafeteria was finished the day before. Because of the rain that day, he was able to confirm there was not a single leak. Up next, the superintendent said ceiling tiles and flooring will be replaced. The parking lot will be getting an upgrade courtesy of Commissioner Rusty Hughes. Hines reported a few minor repairs including work on their two mowers by Tyler County Tractor. Chuck Davidson asked for help from the district and the public to complete his collection of CISD yearbooks. Davidson has served on several CISD committees and has been working on a historical archive for the school. He reported that he has a good collection of school annuals but still needs several for the following years: all for 1946 and before and for the years of '48, '54, '55, '75, '79, '90, '93, and '99. He asks for anyone who might have a copy he can have (or even make a copy of) to give him a call at 936-969- 3277.
