According to Texas State Trooper Sergeant Stephanie Davis, in the morning hours of January 24, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) responded to a two-vehicle crash on US 190 in Jasper County. The crash occurred near Dam B. According to reports, at approximately 6:45 a.m., a 2005 Nissan Altima was traveling eastbound on US 190. A 2014 Nissan Rogue was also traveling eastbound on US 190 behind the Nissan Altima. The driver of the Nissan Altima stopped at the temporary traffic signal which was illuminating red. However, the driver of the Nissan Rogue failed to control her speed and rear-ended the Nissan Altima. The temporary traffic signal regulates traffic as crews work in the immediate area. The driver of the Nissan Altima was identified as 42-year-old Matthew Phillips of Colmesneil, and the driver of the Nissan Rogue was identified as 54-year-old Ela Johnson of Woodville. Both drivers were transported by ambulance to Jasper Memorial hospital with minor injuries. Johnson was issued a traffic citation by the DPS for failure to control speed, and there are no further details to be released. Drivers are encouraged to use caution when utilizing the temporary stop lights when traveling over Dam B during the construction phase of the roadway. Davis reported that while this is an often-used road, relatively few incidents are reported due to the construction or the temporary stop lights. Davis reminds us that carefulness and attention should be used at all times when traveling, especially in or around construction zones.
